About John Wick Movies
The John Wick franchise is a celebrated neo-noir action thriller series created by Derek Kolstad, centering on a legendary hitman (portrayed by Keanu Reeves) who returns from retirement to seek vengeance, navigating a stylized, secret underworld of assassins.
As of early 2026, the franchise consists of four main films, with several expansions in development:
- John Wick (2014): Directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. John comes out of retirement after his puppy, a last gift from his deceased wife, is killed.
- John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017): Directed by Chad Stahelski. John is forced to honor a blood oath to a former associate.
- John Wick: Chapter 3 | Parabellum (2019): Directed by Chad Stahelski. John is declared excommunicado and hunted by the world's elite killers.
- John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023): Directed by Chad Stahelski. John fights for freedom against the High Table, leading to a climax in Paris.
- Ballerina (2025): A spin-off film set between Chapters 3 and 4, starring Ana de Armas and featuring Keanu Reeves.
Ideation Process
When Nate Burgos from Design Feast asked me to work on a movie editorial, my first thought was, “I need to watch all four movies straight away.” My second thought was, “Dogs are very important elements in these chapters, and their presence is very intentional.”
I pitched the idea of featuring each dog as the main element for each chapter, and Nate agreed. The illustration style combines clean line work with the look and feel of a pencil sketch.
After four dog illustrations, my selective perception has shifted. I see dogs everywhere now. I notice their size, hair color, attitude, and personalities. I’m still terrible at guessing dog breeds though!
I’m still a cat person, but now I have a soft spot for cat-sized dogs, and my very favourite ones are dachshunds, in case you were wondering.
