Fourteen | Skateboard Deck Design

Two custom-painted skateboards
PROJECT BACKGROUND: ONGOING SKATEBOARD COLLECTION
In 2013, I designed a pair of skateboard decks to celebrate my partner and my sixth anniversary. Rob used to skate, and due to a knee injury, he now collects decks instead. Today, we have more than 40 hanging on one of the walls in our home.
Many moons have passed since that sixth anniversary, and over the years I’ve developed the habit of designing a new pair of decks to mark each one. Each pair reflects the emotions and evolving state of our relationship. You can explore past designs here.
13 DESIGN CONCEPT: >> On The Move >>
In February 2022, my partner and I temporarily left the big smoke and began experiencing regional life for the first time. It has been quite a shift, to say the least — but trading Ngár-go (Fitzroy)’s cultural energy for the stunning nature of Birpai Country has been deeply healing.
Above all, living on our own for the first time in twelve years has felt like the sweetest kind of honeymoon.
Rob and I are now on the move again: packing, booking travel insurance, printing international vaccination certificates, and getting slightly hysterical with excitement about what comes next.
The plan remains open. There’s no fixed roadmap — only a one-way point of arrival in Barcelona on August 18th, and the intention to keep running our businesses remotely, as we’ve been doing since 2020.
We’re a mid-forties couple with no children, who have lived with housemates for over 25 years each. We don’t know many people our age living and travelling in this way, so we’re learning as we go. Anyone else out there?
Happy anniversary, Mr Tickner. Fourteen years ago, I was looking for a travelling companion — and I couldn’t have found a better one for the journey.
